Several series of pictures

In the early hours of February 4, 1999, 23-year-old Guinean immigrant named Amadou Diallo was fatally shot by four New York City Police Department officers.
The officers fired a total of 41 shots, 19 of which struck Diallo, outside his apartment at the Bronx.
The four officers were charged with second-degree murder. On February 25, 2000, after two days of deliberation, a jury in Albany New York acquitted the officers of all charges.
The following day a rally to protest the verdict more than 2,000 protesters sweeping down Fifth Avenue.
Some held their wallets in the air, yelling, ''This is not a gun,'' referring to testimony by the four white officers who said they shot Mr. Diallo, because they mistook a wallet he held for a gun.
